Inland Through the Catlins and this time a Penguin !

Todays drive was through what we had imagined the Catlins to be, winding road up and down through native NZ bush until we occasionally popped out at the coast again before moving back to the bush.

Only a short drive again today to the NZMCA Park at Niagra just before the coast again.    This property is close to NZ’s “Niagra Falls”  so after consulting our maps Robin and I set off in our respective vehicles to find them.   After about a km along a very bumpy farm track we decided to give up and return to the camp.   As we approached the gate Robin noticed a sign saying Niagra Falls just 20metres from the camp entrance !   Nobody accused us of being observant!   Niagra Falls was a name bestowed by a surveyor with a sense of humour, the falls are about a half a metre high rapid.

To ease the pain of our foolishness we returned for afternoon tea at the caravans where Dot had whipped up a batch of yummy scones covered in jam and cream.   That made us feel better !

We had decided to go to Curio Bay later in the afternoon to see the petrified forest on the beachfront and the idea was to buy Fish and Chips for tea and await the arrival of the Penguins at dusk.   As usual the best laid plans fall apart quite readily.   The only fish & chip shop for miles around doesn’t open on Mondays.

We drove to Curio Bay and what an amazing sight, the coastline is very rugged here and the waves were pounding against the heads.

We were too early for the evening penguin sighting so returned to camp for tea.   We returned to Curio bay after we had eaten and with the numerous other people waited in anticipation.   Finally a small white figure emerged on to the rocks and slowly waddled across the rocks towards the cliffs.   A marvellous sight to see this rare bird in it’s natural state.
