Down the Valley of Fruit

We left Alexandra this morning in brilliant sunshine with a forecast of 24 deg and stayed in the sun all day – lovely!   Our journey to Lawrence took us right down the Teviot Valley past the Roxburgh dam and power station and past what seemed to be dozens of roadside fruit shops and of course we had to stop and buy some.   Pauline was delighted to find Cox’s Orange Pippins, a variety we haven’t seen for a while at home.

Into the little township of Ettrick where we stopped for a photo of a piece of sculptured steel celebrating 150 years of settlement in the Teviot Valley from 1857 to 2007 sculpted by Bill Clarke.

We arrived at our stop for the night at a POP just outside Lawrence on a section owned by a couple who live permanently in their bus on site.   They were off to a Rally for the weekend and left us to our own devices.

We checked out the heritage trail of buildings in the streets of Lawrence then drove up to Gabriels Gully.   Named after Gabriel Read an Australian who found the first payable amounts of gold in the Otago Region.   Gabriel Read was staying on the Turner farm while prospecting and tried to convince Mr Turner to go prospecting, he wasn’t interested despite the gold that Reid was bringing home.   Mrs Turner however, was very interested and joined Gabriel Reid in prospecting.   She ended up  as one of the first women to make her fortune from gold.
