Down the Road to Alexandra

An icy start to this morning and 1st order of business was to turn the heater on and crawl back into bed for half an hour while the chill went off the caravan.   A heavy frost outside after a clear night, I took this photo after about an hour when a lot of the frost had gone but there is still some evidence on the top of Robins wagon.

A Frosty Start to the Day

Just a short drive again today to Alexandra where we were to  stay at the first POP to be established in New Zealand by Val McGrath and her late husband Noel.   Val,s hospitality is legendary and since his passing in 2002 Val has received lots of assistance from motorhomers staying at the POP to help maintain the property .

We popped in to the historic little village of Ophir on the way where once again there was a collection of old buildings to look at.IMG_0597The Old Post & Telegraph Office

We arrived at the POP and set up then went back into Alexandra for a few Groceries and a look through the iSite to see what’s around.

One of the local attractions is the “shaky bridge” so we went for a look.   The original intention in 1877 was to construct a Packhorse bridge but after representations and donations from local citizens it was decided to build a suspension bridge with stone pillars on each bank. After the opening of the nearby combined Manurehikia No 3 bridge ahd as it was so little used The Chairman of the Vincent County Council worried about future maintenance offered to sell it for a pound an offer that was taken up by a couple of locals.   It was eventually closed and handed back to locals in 1951 and after the raising of 670 pounds it was restored as a foot bridge.
