Just wandering around Invercargill today to see a couple of things on Paulines sightseeing list and a couple of things that interested me. We started off at the Southland Museum where we had a good look at the Tuataras on display, evidently there are 90 on display – we could only find three ! We were amused by the antics of a cat on the outside of the Tuatara Houses who was extremely interested in the contents of the Tuatara Display and went from case to case looking for some breakfast.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner !
From there we went past the Invercargill water tower. The foundation stone of this tower was laid in December 1888. Retiring Mayor Mr E.A. Tapper said at the time
“ Instead of a huge iron skeleton, we will now have an ornamental and useful structure from the summit of which we can show visitors a view which would gladden their hearts” The tower contains 200,000 common bricks, 80,000 red pressed bricks 10 to 15,000 pressed yellow bricks and 4,000 pressed black bricks.
We then drove to Hayes Hammer Hardware and what a great hardware store this is. Apart from a tremendous range of hardware far more varied that most stores, this is the home of the original Bert Munro Indian Motorcycle along with one of the replicas made for the film “The World’s Fastest Indian”
The Replica, and the Original (Burt Munro left the original skin in the States)
The store is dotted with motorcycles ,cars and old tools and is a fascinating place to visit.
We found a new camping chair outside a store so I had a seat, Pauline thinks that I’ve lost weight or shrunk on this trip, I wonder what gave her that idea !
From there we went off and visited an old Air Force buddy and his wife. We served in the Air Force with Ingo and Fran in Singapore and have occasionally kept in touch since. A long time ago that was.
